SALA TERRENA

2023

Sgraffito for the garden façade of Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt

SALA TERRENA is the artistic design for the walled-up round arches on the ground floor of the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the arches of the Sala Terrena opened to the English landscape garden. The lines are realized as sgraffito running towards a central vanishing point to visually restore the openness and accessibility of the ground floor. The ornamental model for SALA TERRENA is the perspectives created through trompe l’œuil elements of Baroque garden art, which were constructed from wooden treillages or trellises.
