BOLLWERK

(BULWARK), 2014

Photographic wallpaper (poster series on hoarding), 12 × 2.7 m, (with Meike S. Gleim)

BULWARK focuses on constructions that function as political apparatus (Foucault): the wall, border fence, barricade or the proverbial bulwark, “Bollwerk” in German from which the French word boulevard is also derived. They separate mankind, in us and them, friend and foe, locals and visitors, and keep these divisions in place. The images depicted on the photo mural are themselves placarded across hoardings and illustrate the use of this construction, but also its circumvention and overcoming. The bulwark is an instrument of state power, but it can also become an instrument in the hands of protest movements in the form of barricades.
