BLUME UND PLASTIK 1931/2020
(Flower and Sculpture 1931/2020), 2020
Terrarium, plants, butterflies, fixtures
Based on a photo from the exhibition catalog Blume und Plastik (Flower and Sculpture) from 1931, I reconstructed a terrarium, including masonry fixtures, for the opening exhibition of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. The garden and sculpture exhibition Blume und Plastik took place on site in the spring of 1931 and was enthusiastically received. The exhibition, designed by architects Otto Prutscher and Franz Matuschek, featured sculptures and arts and crafts figurines amid gardens built at the Künstlerhaus, including terrariums and aquariums. The reconstruction of the terrarium in the photo was carried out in cooperation with Danio, an association for aquaristics and terraristics, which already equipped the exhibition in 1931 and celebrated its onehundred and tenth anniversary in 2020.
By recreating a moment from the long exhibition history of the Künstlerhaus from a time when politically, for better or for worse, many things seemed possible, the history is not only quoted, but in a way the plants that developed new sprouts during the exhibition, brought it back to life.
