AUS DER GRUFT (From The Vault) presents interviews with clients of the Gruft (English: „vault“), a care facility for homeless people in Vienna’s 6th district that was started in the vault under a church (hence the name). The interviews can be listened to on a park bench in Esterházy Park, not far from the Gruft facility.
The interviewees are telling about their experiences with homelessness and about how they are using the city and more concretely the neighborhood of the Gruft that is known as a shopping paradise and upscale residential district. From their accounts arises a perspective on these surroundings that do not address homeless people but rather those with purchasing power. From their view point the interviewees are describing possibilities of using public space beyond mere consumer behavior.
